I’m midway through a late lunch with Alec—not a Jasper approved field trip this time, and I don’t fucking care—when I feel eyes on me. I start to rethink the whole not caring thing as I slowly turn, already preparing myself for the anger I know I’m going to find all over Jasper’s face.
It’s not Jasper.
“Ah, hell,” Alec mutters.
I turn back to my food and resume eating, doing my best to ignore the stare I can still feel. “What’s the deal with that guy?” I ask between bites.
“I don’t know. Miles seems to have a type and that type is lives in Kings Court. I guess nobody ever taught him not to shit where he eats. I’m sure there’s a lawsuit there waiting to happen.” He pauses. “Or I guess, there would be if we lived somewhere where people actually had the money for lawyers.”
He looks away sheepishly, as if he’s embarrassed talking to me about money. I’m not sure what his story is, but I get the feeling he wasn’t always a Kings Court kind of guy. I don’t ask, because I worry showing too much interest in him would give him the wrong idea. I know he’s got a schoolboy crush on me, and it makes him just brave enough to hang out with me without Jasper’s permission—but not so brave as to actually try anything.
It makes him the perfect person to hang out with, but it also means I feel like I’m watching my every move trying not to lead him on.
“He’s kind of an asshole isn’t he? What’s the appeal?” I shouldn’t be so curious, but I can’t stop thinking about Ronnie’s warning that the girls he’s with all end up gone from the apartments for good even once he’s done with them.
“Go out with me, and you can see for yourself.” The smooth voice is so unexpectedly close that I nearly tip out of my seat. He puts a hand on my shoulder to steady me that I automatically shrug off.
I twist in my seat so my back’s not to him. I don’t actually care about being polite, but I don’t necessarily trust having my back to this guy.
“Kind of rude of you to butt into someone else’s conversation.”
“Oh, but gossiping about me—that isn’t rude?”
“Who says we were talking about you? Do you hear the word asshole and automatically assume it’s about you every time?” I bat my eyelashes up at him as sarcasm laces my tone.
He puts his hands up like he’s trying to calm a wild animal. “I’m not trying to fight with you. Sorry for eavesdropping, I was just coming over to say hello. Feel free to say whatever you’d like behind my back, I won’t take too much offense.”
He’s so good-natured about it that it only makes me more suspicious of him. Because he’s trying too hard.
Instead of telling him that, I point at the counter. “You should probably go wait over there so you hear when your name gets called.”
His smile drops slightly.
